PureNews February 2026 – That cough that just won’t go away…

by Newsletters

Happy February! I hope you are staying well in these deep winter months. If you are like many of my patients, you may be dealing with a cough that just won’t quit. Coughs have been lingering this season, and I have had many conversations about how to address them.

There is a wonderful quote from Sherlock Holmes that I think captures the heart of what we do in homeopathy: “As a rule, the more bizarre a thing is the less mysterious it proves to be. It is your commonplace, featureless crimes which are really puzzling, just as a commonplace face is the most difficult to identify.” In homeopathy, the commonplace features of a cough, the fact that you’re coughing, that your throat is irritated, these things are the same from one patient to the next and tell us very little. What we need are the peculiar features, the details that make your cough uniquely yours. Is it worse at night or in the morning? Does cold air trigger it or soothe it? Is there a tickle, a rattle, or a bark? When we match the unique features of your symptoms with the unique features of a remedy, that is when healing happens.

Remember too that a cough is often your body’s way of expelling something it doesn’t want. When we work with the body rather than simply suppressing the cough, we give it the best chance to heal completely. If you catch a cough early and differentiate the remedy well, it can often resolve quickly with the right homeopathic medicine and good hydration. However, a cough that persists or doesn’t begin to improve within a few days, especially a dry, persistent cough, needs further attention, so please reach out if that’s where you find yourself.

Stay warm and well, and let me know if you need anything.
Much love, Dr. Amerine

Homeopathic Remedies for Coughs

As you consider which remedy might help you, pay close attention to the modalities: what makes your cough better or worse. I find in practice that it is often easier to identify what makes a cough worse (the things you instinctively avoid) than what makes it better. Use these clues like Holmes would use his observations: carefully and specifically.

Aconite – This is your remedy if the cough comes on suddenly, often after exposure to dry, cold weather. The cough is dry, hoarse, and croupy, often waking you from sleep. It tends to be worse at night, especially after midnight. There is often great thirst and the mouth feels dry. Think of Aconite when the cough appears out of nowhere and catches you off guard.

Bryonia – When a common cold moves into the chest, Bryonia is often indicated. The cough is dry and worse from any motion or from breathing in deeply. Children needing this remedy will often hold their chest when they cough. The cough is also worse in warm rooms and during or after eating. There may be a tickling sensation in the larynx that triggers the cough. You’ll notice extreme thirst for large quantities of water at long intervals, and the lips and mouth feel very dry.

Spongia – This remedy has a distinctive dry, barking, croupy cough that sounds almost like a saw going through wood. The air passages feel dry with very little expectoration. The cough is worse from cold air, warm rooms, talking, lying with the head low, drinking cold fluids, or eating sweets. It tends to be worse in the early part of the night. Warm food or drinks bring relief.

Drosera – When the cough comes in bouts—continuous, dry, and barking—think of Drosera. The cough has a spasmodic quality with a tickling sensation that leads to choking or even vomiting. It is worse lying down and after midnight, especially around 2 a.m. The person may hold their chest during coughing spells and have a deep, hoarse voice.

Antimonium tartaricum – This is the remedy for a loud, rattling cough where you can hear the mucus but it just won’t come up. The person may be drowsy, weak, and quite feeble. Symptoms are often worse around 4 a.m. There is an anxious restlessness, and the person will sit up because breathing is so difficult. Though chilly, they want cool rooms and open windows.

Pulsatilla – The hallmark here is a cough that is dry during the day but loose and productive at night and upon waking. The expectoration is yellow or greenish. The cough is worse in a warm room or warm weather and worse when lying down at night. Walking in cool, open air brings relief. The person needing Pulsatilla is often clingy, weepy, and wants company.

Hepar sulph – Think of this remedy when the person is extremely chilly and irritable. The cough is barking and croupy, worse from any exposure to cold—cold air, cold drinks, or even just uncovering a part of the body. There may be much rattling in the chest with difficult expectoration. Warm, humid air (like a steamy bathroom) brings relief.

Remember, matching your specific symptoms to the remedy is what makes homeopathy so effective. You are the detective of your own body—pay attention to what makes your cough better or worse, and the right remedy will often become clear.

Over the past month, you may have received an invitation to join Follow My Health, our new patient portal integrated with our practice management system (EHR).

Thank you to those who shared feedback about their experience. We’ve learned that Follow My Health is currently experiencing some integration issues, which may create inconsistencies in how the portal functions. We understand how frustrating that can be and appreciate your patience.

To prevent any confusion or inconvenience, we have temporarily paused patient portal access, with the exception of appointment reminder emails. These reminders should not include any pre-appointment forms to complete. There is no action you need to take prior to any appointment.

While we do not yet have an estimated timeline for resolution, we are actively monitoring the situation and will provide an update as soon as the issues are fully resolved. Once access is restored, we will share a simple user guide to help make the system easy to navigate.

Magic Socks

You’d probably never guess that a pair of wet socks could pull congestion from your head and stimulate your immune system. Sounds like hocus-pocus promoted by a traveling charlatan, right?

Historically, this hydrotherapy was called “Wet Sock Therapy.” At some point, a marketing savvy naturopath explained to young patients that the overnight drying of the socks was a “healing magic trick” and the name quickly evolved into “Magic Socks.” Kids love it and it actually does work like magic to arrest the onset of mild colds and flus. Here’s how:

When covered (insulated) with wool, damp socks draw congestion from the head and work overnight to stimulate systemic circulation. This treatment reflexively decreases congestion in the upper respiratory passages, head, and throat.

The socks will dry overnight as the body brings warm, fresh blood to the feet. This, in turn, invigorates the immune system and helps fend off acute illness. Magic Socks can be used nightly when any concern exists about the onset of an acute infection or illness and with any ongoing insomnia.

For best results repeat treatment for three nights in a row or as instructed by your doctor. If you develop a loss of sensation in your feet while using Magic Socks, remove the socks and check in with your doctor. Do not use this therapy with any condition that has resulted in loss of sensation or circulation to the feet unless first consulting with your doctor.

Make a Pair of Magic (Wet) Socks

  1. Before bed, wet a pair of thin, cotton anklets in cold water.
  2. Wring out excess water and place in the freezer for 5-10 minutes.
  3. Put the socks on your feet.
  4. Pull a pair of heavy wool socks over the anklets and climb into bed.
  5. Cover well; sleep all night with the socks on.
