May is National Stroke Awareness Month

by Newsletters

Hello and Happy May!

For many, May is the busiest month of the year. There are graduations, weddings, end of school events, recitals and not to mention spring fever – all many of us, me included, want to do is go outside and do something outside. I hope for all of us that we can be reminded to slow down and enjoy each day and not let it go so fast that we did not know what happened to us.

We live in the era where every month, week or even day is national awareness. Well May is National Stroke Awareness month. I felt it was a good idea to talk about a few things related to strokes in general. We tend to think of strokes as something that happens when we get “old”. While this is true, most people who suffer from a stroke have lived more years than other people, a stroke can happen at any age. Just in the last month I met a 2 year old who suffered from a stroke, someone in their 40’s and then someone in their 70’s.

What exactly is a stroke? A stroke is a loss of blood flow to the brain. This can happen for a few reasons, the most notable are due to clots of some kind in the brain or a blood vessel that breaks open and bleeds. However there are other causes of decreased blood flow to the brain such as inflammation of the blood vessels that could be caused from infection or autoimmune disease. Regardless of the kind of stroke someone suffers, symptoms are similar and should be acted on right away. There is an acronym known as BE FAST that is taught for how to recognize a stroke.

B – Balance – is someone’s balance off or do they appear to be stumbling.
E – Eyes – is there any sudden change in vision.
F – Face – are there any abnormalities in the face, the mouth drops, the face is numb…
A – Arms (or leg) weakness
S – Speech – are they saying funny things or not understanding what is being said
T – Time – if you suspect a stroke time is of the essence – reach out to 911 for quick treatment to prevent life long consequences.

I want to talk a little more about time – if you suspect a stroke it is important to call 911 or to go immediately to an emergency room. On the way you can take a dose of the homeopathic medicine Arnica to help with any injury to the brain but I can’t stress enough the importance of seeking emergency care. This particular awareness has been important for our family as my husband falls in to the rare category of inflammation of the blood vessels that cause a decrease in blood flow or hemorrhage into the brain. We have had to make sure our children and those around him know symptoms so should something happen we can all act accordingly. I hope to not be in that situation however if we know what to look for much can be done.

Now for some homeopathy talk – I want to talk about about symptoms – what is a symptom exactly? A symptom is your body’s way of communicating that something is wrong. Symptoms are VERY important in homeopathy because it is how we find the correct homeopathic medicine. A symptom is not a theory or speculation – what do I mean by this? A parasite in your body is not a symptom. Lyme disease is not a symptom, Allergies are not a symptom. These are general terms used to describe something but are not at all helpful when it comes to finding a homeopathic medicine. A symptom must always include the following

Location – where exactly is the problem. Example the location is in my head on the right side near my temple.
Sensation – What does it feel like – the pain in my head is a throbbing pain that is very intense.
Modalities – this means what makes it better or worse and does NOT include medications. It means the headache is better with cold applications and hard pressure to the head. The headache is worse with light and movement.
Concominants – What other symptoms come with the headache – when I get a headache I am cold except for my head.

If you can define each of these 4 things we can find a homeopathic medicine that will address the symptoms you have and thus stimulate your own body to heal. If we can stimulate your own body to heal then the “offender” does not matter your body will heal itself.

Keep this in mind when you are using homeopathy or sharing your symptoms with me or any homeopath.

Much Love!
Dr. Amerine

Homeopathy ER

This remedy has many indications and is always based on the symptoms produced, not the disease name as are all homeopathic medicines. A person who needs phosphorus will almost always crave ice cold drinks, if they don’t want ice cold drinks it is fairly unlikely that phosphorus will be the indicated remedy. This person also will want company and consolation, they do not want to be alone.

Phosphorus tends to be indicated in hemorrhages of any kind. This can be a strong bloody nose, bright red blood from a cut that won’t heal etc. Phosphorus will also have a lot of burning pains, the pains can be anywhere in the body from head to toe, inside out.

Phosphorus can also be indicated in the dreaded stomach bug. Someone will drink water (ice cold) then about 20 minutes after drinking they will throw it back up. This symptom has been confirmed clinically over and over. There are many other symptoms of Phosphorus but these brief general ones can help you prescribe the remedy correctly.

Homemade Almond Milk

While it is very convenient to grab some almond milk from the store, nothing tops the enjoyment of making it yourself! Not only is it a fun experience, but making almond milk lets you play around with thickness and flavor, making homemade almond milk ideal for baking. Finally, the ingredients are few, and it can be made in a blender!

Prep: 10 Min. Cook: 0 Min. Total: 10 Min. Servings: 10

  • 1 cup raw almonds (soaked overnight in cool water)
  • 5 cups filtered water
  • 1 pinch sea salt
  • 2 whole dates (omit for unsweetened)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract (omit for plain)

  • Put everything into a high-speed blender, and blend until creamy and smooth. Keep it running for at least 1-2 minutes to get the most out of your almonds.
  • Strain the mixture using a nut milk bag, a thin dish towel, or cheesecloth. Lay the cloth over a mixing bowl, pour the almond milk, and gather the corners together. Lift the cloth and squeeze it until all of the liquid is extracted. Place the cloth and used almond pulp to the side.
  • Once separated, store the milk in a jar or other airtight container and place it in the refrigerator. Almond milk will keep for up to 4-5 days, though it is best when fresh.
  • Due to separation, shake well before use.

  • In a pinch almond milk can be made quickly. Instead of soaking the almonds overnight, bathe them for 1-2 hours in very hot water.
  • Change the thickness of your almond milk by pouring more or less water into the blender. For baking, thicker milk may be preferred.
  • Dates are added for sweetness but other sweeteners such as honey or maple syrup work fine. Omit sweeteners entirely for plain almond milk.
  • For vanilla-flavored almond milk, you can also use 1 scraped vanilla bean per 1 tsp vanilla extract, or this can be substituted for other flavors of almond milk such as plain, chocolate, or berry.
  • For chocolate almond milk add 2 Tbsp. cocoa powder
  • For “berry milk” add 1/2 cup berries
  • Instead of throwing out the leftover almond pulp, consider saving it for a baking project such as crackers.
